Lastly, but certainly not least, I am so excited to introduce you to our Food/Travel Editor, Carlie of the health and wellness blog, Rice and Repeat. She was the missing puzzle piece to our team! We swear by her recipes/ baking skills and refer to her for all our travel adventurous needs! Keep reading to learn more about Carlie!
Carlie, 23, is from Monmouth Beach, NJ and recently moved back to her hometown along the Jersey coastline after graduating from Pace University in New York City with a double major in Communications and Film and Screen Studies. During her time living in NYC, Carlie found herself exploring her bustling career opportunities and interning for a variety of companies, which ranged from an award winning PR firm to planning exhibitions for the Discovery Times Square museum. She got a knack for event planning, marketing, and videos, which led her to where she is today: a videographer and event planner for the Italian food company Colavita USA. In her free time, she loves to bake, swim or hike, and watch horror movies. With a passion for writing since she was very young, Carlie eagerly jumped on the opportunity to become a contributor, specifically sharing her adventures in the kitchen through recipes and experiences.
1. What is one thing every college girl needs?
Every college girl needs decent bedding! I bought jersey sheets and a Tempurpedic mattress pad my sophomore year and I never wanted to get out of bed (this can be a good and bad thing.) Nevertheless, it’s nice to have something a bit luxurious to enjoy when most of the time, you’re pinching pennies in college to be able to stock up on necessities like food and textbooks.
2. Do you have a pet?
Yes! I have two Jack Russel Terriors. One is 13 named Sandy and one is 2 months named Louie. We just got him and he is so adorable, although he likes to wake me up by biting my hair.
3. What helps you be so confident?
I’ve fortunately always been pretty confident and outgoing. I’ve never been shy. But the times I have felt myself holding back (whether it be by talking to someone new or saying something I’m unsure of) I make myself just go for it. A good motto is, “if it scares you then you have to do it.”
4. What inspires your fashion sense?
I wore a uniform to school from Kindergarten to my senior year of High School. Then, my freshman year of college in New York City, I was thrust into the thriving fashion world of Manhattan, which was so new to me. I developed a deep love for fashion blogs around that same time. Those combined elements gave me a love for expressing myself through my clothes. These days, I stay up to date with trends and I’m always forcing myself to buy interesting pieces that aren’t necessarily “me” to change it up.
5. Favorite places to shop?
I can’t really choose just one! But Brandy Melville, TopShop, Zara, Urban Outfitters, and Anthropologie are my favorites.
6. What is the biggest lesson you have learned in your twenties so far?
You don’t have to be on good terms with everyone. I used to be such a people pleaser and I hated if someone didn’t like me. Then I realized that I was worth much more than what some people were giving me. It’s ok to cut out “friends” that don’t treat you with love, acceptance, and openness.
7. If you were to recommend one fashion staple what would it be?
I once read that the right shoes can change an entire outfit and I agree. A sweater and jeans can be made extraordinary with a pair of studded mules or colorful heels, for example. If you can splurge on one item, I say go for the shoes!
8. What do you do to unwind/relax?
I recently had a day off for the first time in a long time. I baked some muffins, went on a hike, and watched a true crime series on Netflix. Those three pretty much sum it up. However, if it’s summer, I’m truly happiest at the beach.
9. Favorite movie?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
10. What is the craziest thing on your bucket list?
I’d say skydiving but that’s very cliché so I’ll say: Hold a Panda. They’re my favorite animal and I have a feeling I’ll cry if I get to hold one.
11. What is the best book you ever read?
Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt.
12. What is something that you have achieved?
I studied abroad in England, which allowed me to venture to many different European countries. I sometimes flew alone or had to communicate vital information to someone who didn’t speak any English. It gave me a real sense of pride and independence, which I definitely did not have before. Now, I often travel alone and I have no problem with it.
13. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
Hawaii. Unfortunately, it’s too far from my friends and family but when I’m there I’m happier and more relaxed than anywhere else. Everyone has such an easygoing nature. It’s like the chaos and stress of the world doesn’t quite reach that part of the country. One day, if I’m lucky, I’ll have a house there.
14. What are your 3 favorite foods?
Gnocchi (the best is Angelo’s in Little Italy, NYC), homemade pizza (the best is at my house on Friday nights), and ice cream (The best is Stroll’s Lighthouse in New Jersey in the summertime).
15. What scares you the most?
Sharks-- because I watched Jaws when I was five years old. But also, living a mundane life. I always want to have a life that is exciting, passionate, and fun.
16. Are you fluent in any other languages?
If not, which language would you choose if you could? Unfortunately, no. I would choose French if I could because it is so beautiful to listen to and I love how the words sound.
17. Are you usually late, early, or right on time?
I’m always late. I try! But everyone knows it at this point so I don’t think they ever expect me to be on time.
18. Morning or night person?
A night person. In the morning, I don’t usually talk much until I get some coffee in me and I tend to do everything pretty slowly. Maybe that’s why I’m always late.
19. How tall are you?
20. Where are you from?
Monmouth Beach, NJ. The Jersey Shore. I swear it’s nice and not at all how it is represented on MTV.
21. Where is your favorite place to vacation?
My favorite is either Positano, Italy or Dubrovnik, Croatia.
22. What did you want to be when you grew up?
23. What’s your favorite movie quote?
(This is so hard because I was a film major!) But I’m going with this quote from The Holiday- “I like corny. I’m looking for corny in my life.”
