1. It Doesn't Get Easier
What?? I never have to worry about that awkward moment of getting denied EVER AGAIN, you may be saying. Which is very true. Just because you can get in and are officially legal, however, does not mean that the hangover isn't going to hit you hard like a mother trucker the next day. I swear by it, the day I turned 21 I saw a whole new side of hangovers.
2. You are still only as legal as your squads last fake ID
While you may be 21 and ready to walk up to the bouncer like you belong on a VIP list.. odds are you have that one friend that still isn't 21 with you and that limits you. Bringing your entire entourage down when their fake gets denied. We hate to break it to you but you don't actually turn 21 until everyone else turns 21.
3. The generous pour
Here is a little wine terminology 101 for you. Once you turn 21, anyone that ever hands you a drink will be judged by their pour because you no longer have to just take what you can get. Nico, the French sommelier at the local wine bar, gave me a weak pour one time... I haven't been back since. How rude.
4. "Lets just get one drink"
You are legal and ready to take your maturity in drinking to the next level. The amount of "Let's just get one drink" will never be just that, no matter how hard you try. One drink leads to two, two to three, and soon you are officially drunk off wine or adult cocktails attempting to turn the restaurant in to a karaoke bar. By the way, this still happens, just at a much faster pace, because well tolerance. Oops.
5. You are Completely and Totally Broke
Now that you no longer need to have an alcoholic dealer, you can enjoy a bottle at your own leisure. That's how it happens, you will find yourself in Trader Joes strolling the aisles like the healthy and mature girl you are with nothing but greens and vegetables in your cart because "your diet starts tomorrow". Then you get to the wine aisle... and a bottle falls right off the shelf and into your cart. We hate when that happens. You will become broke simply from buying alcohol just because you can. So make the last drop last as long as you make $5.53 on your debit card last!
6. Your Priorities Change
To be honest, this whole going out thing was way more fun when I wasn't legally allowed to be doing it. Now it is more of a full time job to have a social life and my rates are $15 an hour plus serges on weekdays. But seriously, if it doesn't match up with my hair washing days, you can bet it isn't gonna happen unless it includes getting chocolate wasted while watching Netflix.
7. Confidence Comes with Age
Welcome to the twenty fun club where it is now a legal choice and privilege to make bad decisions. You will get offended when the bouncer doesn't really look at your ID enough. Like excuse me, but that was 21 years in the making, please take a look again, it is really me and that is really my name... and my address in case you were wondering. I am kind of a big deal!
8. You never have to worry about finding plans again... because you make them.
As mentioned above, this phase will die with weeks to come, but until then you will be begging friends to drink with you simply because you can and you will find any excuse to because being an adult is hard. Margarita Mondays? Wine Wednesdays? And of course who can pass up bottomless brunches Saturday and Sunday?
9. Find a bartender you love and never let them go
This is an important part of being 21. Aside from learning everything you need to know about alcohol from them, they will always have your back in a bar. You will quickly learn what your go-to drinks are, and so will they. They will help you to branch out and try new things, while always knowing your limits.
10. ALL THE FEELS.
It is going to hit you, and hit you hard. This is it, you are officially legal, you will never not be legal again. You are an adult, yet you're still figuring things out, have so many questions, and alcohol isn't answering them. You suddenly become torn between what is acceptable and what is not. Always remember, that you are still young and have a whole life ahead of you. Now is your time to make mistakes, so just have fun!
To my baby sister... Happy 21st Birthday!! This is such a special time in your life and I am so happy to be there through it all with you! Love you!
What have you learned since turning 21? Quick, braid my hair... tell me more!
