Coffee isn't just a beverage, it's a way of life. Not only do I drink coffee religiously every morning because I actually need it to get through a day, but I love the taste of it. I actually crave it. If I haven't had my morning coffee, I won't stop thinking about it until I have it. I got in such a rut of needing caffeine that it just became unhealthy. It wasn't until someone explained the chemistry of caffeine and how it affects your body that I decided to cut it out after 10 am. Something I found interesting was that caffeine stays in your system for 12 hours. This can be a blessing and curse at times. Here are some reasons that I found through my mid afternoon coffee cleanse that I benefitted from.
1. You will sleep better
As mentioned above, caffeine stays your system for 12 hours. So that mid afternoon latte that you are indulging in to get you through the stretch after lunch is only going to keep you up later and cause youth lose the sleep you need and deserve. I started noticing that I was not able to sleep at night. After taking so many calming vitamins, diffusing relaxing essential oils, and trying out a sleep meditation, nothing was really working. I then found out that this lack of sleep was caused by my mid afternoon latte run. So I decided to cut it out for a month to see what happened. If you are like me, then I know what you are thinking and how hard this may be. I live to tell you it was not easy. I became addicted to that past noon cup of Joe, and that only made it more of a challenge, but it was doable. I instantly noticed that my sleep was back to a normal, healthy pattern.
2. You will drink more water
One thing I have always struggled with but strive to achieve is drinking more water throughout the day. One tip I have (stay tuned or a post on how to drink more water in a day) is cutting the afternoon cup of coffee out and replacing it with water. So often I find myself hungry after a meal or tired when I shouldn't be. Majority of these feelings are caused due to a lack of hydration. I challenge you to replace the cup of coffee with water and see how that curbs the need for caffeine. It is naturally a healthier option and offers nothing but benefits. It will get your digestive system going throughout the rest of the day and help boost your metabolism when it starts to slow down due to a lack of energy in the long hours of the afternoon.
3. You will save money
I am definitely not one to suggest cutting coffee out all together, whether you are making it from home or purchasing it from somewhere. I spend more money than I would like to admit at Starbucks and am a part of their loyalty program (Still working on the gold star). LA is also filled with so many cool coffee shops and it is often a place where meetings are held, a place to work, or a social environment to hang out with friends. This makes it so hard to make the decision not to drink coffee after noon. Fact be known, you will save more than you think from this. Who needs to spend $10 a day on coffee?? No-one. So try saving the money you would be spending on a latte and opt for a healthier and cheaper option. It can only benefit you.
